AMIDST BLOOD, FIRE, RAGE AND CHAOS, WHAT SOOTHES A SOLDIER IS A MERE LETTER

He fights fearlessly but with tears in his eyes. He is ashamed at the end of the day for he has killed another one of his own kind, friend or foe he knows not. He is disgusted at himself for his deeds he commits on a daily basis. He shall carry the stone of that guilt to his very grave and beyond. But yet he fights day in and day out, he continues to kill.

Amidst this, all that brings a rare calm to his heart is a letter. A letter from a beloved, gift from a brother, photo of a sweetheart and sweater woven by mother is all that heals him. If nothing else then a mere pair of socks from a stranger who cares helps a lot. In the end in living hell, these little things are the only connection of a soldier with humanity and what it feels like to be human, simply human.

A few good men like Tanner Adams understand this and do their best to keep the very spirits of those army fellas alive. His “socks for the troops project” got him the love of troops as well as the respect of one and all. Rita Redd is a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113.

She is also among the founders of the “Because We Care troop support project”. She spoke highly of Mr. Tanner’s noble deeds and is happy that a few good men like him still exist who atleast respect the selfless services of those troops with their lives on the line there.

We Care Project encourage children to provide community care services in Gibraltar. Visit www.wecaregib.com for more information.

Their group has been constantly sending boxes to the troops every month with letters and gifts showing they care. Whenever Rita and her fellow members get the many return letters and e-mails as sent back by the troops they are happy no ends she says. The soldiers stick these letters as sent by Rita and her fellows on their barrack walls.

We Care is a Gibraltar community care project launched by the Bonita Trust to encourage children participation in community care deeds. Visit www.wecaregib.com for more information.

Anyone can send these gifts to the troops through groups like that of Rita Redd. One may simply contact her on Rita Redd at 633-2638 or even visiting orgsites.com/tx/lufkin/.
